Tired of trailing her mother's military career to base after base, nineteen-year-old Olivia instead heads to the idyllic Atlantic island of Martha's Vineyard for the summer. Tony can’t believe he’s headed back to Martha’s Vineyard this summer, not when the ghosts of his fractured relationship with Jenny lurk all over the Island. But the bar manager at the resort where Tony worked last summer said the new owners are paying top dollar, so Tony swallows his pride and returns to the rundown rental.
After a chance encounter with the wild child daughter of the new owners, Tony meets Bex, the older, more responsible sister who’s just back from London and nursing a broken heart. Tired of her sister’s gossip site exploits taking up all of their parents’ attention, she has a proposal for Tony: She’ll pay him to pretend to be her boyfriend for the summer. Maybe doing something completely unexpected like dating a bartender will finally get her family to sit up and take notice in a way that playing by the rules never did.
As Tony navigates a brave new world of money and privilege, he also finds himself falling for Bex for real. When what’s supposed to be a simple arrangement becomes something more, Tony will need to decide if he’s ready to put his heart on the line, knowing if he does, Bex just might break it.

Even though Jenny just graduated from college, she’s feeling adrift as she returns to Martha’s Vineyard for a third summer in a row. She finds comfort in coming back to the same job and ramshackle rental, even if the only roommate left from their original summer crew is Katrina. So much has changed since that first summer, including Jenny’s increasingly complicated feelings for Kat.
Her refuge becomes more like a rager when Lily, the wild child heiress to a hotel empire whose family owns the resort where Jenny waits tables, moves in after her parents kick her out. Life with Lily around is an endless party, and Lily is determined to teach Jenny to let go of the many responsibilities she feels. Meanwhile, Kat is always there to help clean up the chaos that Lily leaves in her wake, taking care of Jenny in a way no one has before. As the summer wears on, Jenny finds herself torn between the spirited Lily and the grounded Kat. Before the summer ends, Jenny will have to decide which path, and person, she’s going to take.
